TODAY’S FEATURE: Your Phone

The Telephone. What a Game Changer!

Think about it. Before the telephone, how did people connect instantly across miles? Letters? Carrier pigeons? Maybe some shouting from the next mountain over? Then, in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell said, “Watson, come here; I want to see you.” And just like that, the game changed. Conversations became instant. Relationships were built faster. Business deals were closed before the ink on the paper dried.

Fast forward to 2024. The phone in your hand does everything short of making your morning coffee (and let’s be honest, it’s probably connected to your coffee maker). Yet, here’s the irony: the one feature that started it all—the ability to make a call—is the one feature most people avoid like a bad sequel to a blockbuster movie.

Why? Let’s be real: fear. Fear of rejection. Fear of stumbling over words. Fear of being awkward or interrupting someone’s day. But here’s a truth bomb: your phone is your greatest tool for prospecting and building your business. Period.

Why Most People Don’t Pick Up the Phone

Let’s talk about the giant elephant in the room: why are people so scared to use the phone for prospecting? The reasons aren’t as mysterious as they seem.

Fear of Rejection

This is the big one, isn’t it? Nobody likes being told no. It stings. It feels personal. But here’s the reality: when someone says no, they’re not rejecting you; they’re rejecting the offer, the timing, or their own readiness.

Reframe it: Every “no” is one step closer to a “yes.” It’s like a treasure hunt—each dead end gets you closer to the jackpot.

Fear of Awkwardness

What if you say the wrong thing? Or there’s an awkward silence? The answer: embrace it. Awkward silences are normal. They’re moments of thoughtfulness. What feels like forever to you is usually just a couple of seconds to them.

“I Don’t Want to Bother Them”

Ah, the classic excuse. If you genuinely believe in the value you’re offering, you’re not bothering anyone. You’re helping them solve a problem.

Lack of Confidence

Many people avoid the phone because they’re not confident in their ability to handle objections or lead a conversation. Here’s a secret: confidence comes from doing, not thinking about doing.

Why the Phone Is Still King

Sure, we live in the age of DMs, email blasts, and TikTok trends, but the phone is still king for prospecting. Here’s why:

It’s Personal

A call allows for real-time, human-to-human connection. Unlike texts or emails, where tone can be misinterpreted, a phone call brings your voice, energy, and enthusiasm directly into the conversation.

It’s Immediate

Want an answer now? Call. Emails sit unread. Texts are ignored. A phone call demands attention in the moment.

It Builds Trust

Hearing someone’s voice builds a sense of trust and authenticity that no perfectly crafted email ever could.

It’s a Two-Way Street

A phone call isn’t just about pitching—it’s about listening. It’s a chance to hear concerns, ask questions, and genuinely connect with the person on the other end.

The Power of Prospecting with Your Phone

Let’s break it down: prospecting is about creating opportunity. And your phone is the ultimate opportunity generator.

When you pick up the phone to prospect, you’re not just dialing numbers. You’re building relationships, offering solutions, and opening doors. The phone allows you to have conversations—the foundation of every great business deal.

It’s proactive: You’re not waiting for opportunities to come to you; you’re creating them.

It’s targeted: A phone call is direct, allowing you to connect with the exact person you want to reach.

It’s efficient: In just a few minutes, you can qualify a lead, address their pain points, and even close a deal.

How to Overcome the Fear

Still feeling hesitant? Let’s tackle that fear head-on.

Start Small

You don’t have to call 50 people today. Start with 5. Reach out to warm leads—people who already know or have interacted with you in some way.

Have a Script (But Don’t Sound Scripted)

A script isn’t about robotic delivery; it’s a safety net to keep you focused. Include:

A strong opener (e.g., “Hi [Name], this is [Your Name]. I noticed you were interested in [specific thing] and wanted to share an idea that might help.”)

A question to engage them (e.g., “Is that something you’re currently working on?”)

A clear call to action (e.g., “Would you be open to a quick chat this week to explore options?”)

Focus on Value

If you’re offering real value, the fear of rejection fades. People respond to genuine interest and solutions.

Practice Makes Progress

The more you do it, the easier it gets. Think of your first calls as practice runs. You’re learning, not performing.

The Excuses (And How to Crush Them)

Let’s call out the excuses one more time:

“What if they say no?”

Great! That means you’re trying. Success comes from taking action, not avoiding it.

“I don’t know what to say.”

Write down 3 questions you can ask every lead. Curiosity keeps the conversation flowing.

“They probably don’t want to hear from me.”

What if they do? What if they’ve been waiting for exactly what you have to offer?

Three Action Steps to Start Prospecting Today

Let’s make this easy.

Set a Goal:

Start with 5 calls a day. It’s small enough not to overwhelm you but big enough to create momentum.

Track Your Progress:

Use a CRM or even a simple spreadsheet to keep track of who you’ve called, what you discussed, and when to follow up.

Follow Up Consistently:

Most deals aren’t closed on the first call. Follow up consistently and with purpose. A simple, “I just wanted to check in and see if you had any questions” can go a long way.

Your Challenge: Pick Up the Phone

The phone is the simplest, fastest, and most effective tool for prospecting. Yet, most people treat it like it’s radioactive. Here’s your challenge: pick it up. Make the call. Start the conversation.

Because the truth is, your next deal, your next opportunity, your next big break—it’s just one conversation away.

Now go make it happen. Your future self will thank you.
